Donut-shaped objects in the sky are among a number of "UFO sightings" recorded in North Wales over the last two and a half years. A new interactive map has revealed there were almost 1,000 UFO sightings documented across the UK in that time.

According to the map, there have been nine strange sightings recorded across North Wales, including around the areas of Wrexham, Buckley, Flint, Mold and Llandudno over that period. They included a "Column of approximately 12 very bright lights flying low and silently overhead, disappeared behind clouds", in Flint on February 26 2022 and "two bright lights following the ISS (International Space Station) before moving away and up before fading" in Mold on May 16 2021.

There were also "five short elongated shiny objects, turning into donut-shaped dark circles before two merged into a yellow white light" reported around Wrexham on September 10 2022. It comes amid renewed interest in the UFO or UAP (Unidentified Aerial Phenomena) topic, after the US Congress recently heard from retired Major David Grusch, a former Air Force intelligence officer, about possible evidence of extra-terrestrial contact.

In a highly anticipated testimony before a House Oversight sub-committee, Mr Grusch said the US is concealing a long-standing programme that retrieves and reverse-engineers unidentified flying objects. He said the US has likely been aware of “non-human” activity since the 1930s.

Former navy pilot Ryan Graves and retired Cmdr David Fravor, also gave evidence about encountering UAPs. Although the testimony in Congress has created a media storm, some scientists remain sceptical the US has secretly found evidence of extra-terrestrial life.

That includes Professor Brian Cox who said “extraordinary” claims had been made, but without “extraordinary evidence” to back it up. However others disagree, including Dr Steven Greer, who held a press conference at Washington's National Press Conference in 2001, featuring the testimonies of a number of retired air force, intelligence and aviation officers.

He claims the evidence shows earth is being visited by extra-terrestrials. Luis Elizondo, a former US Army counterintelligence special agent, who had headed up the US Government's Advanced Aerospace Threat Identification Program (AATIP) programme, set up to investigate such phenomena, said in a statement: "Many of these UAP display beyond next generation capabilities" and "remain unidentified".

UFO spotters in this country also believe the British government has communicated with the US regarding its UAP programmes. And there has been plenty to see in the skies above the UK. Between January 2021 and May this year, the UFO spotter website UFO Identified documented a total of 957 sightings. That includes 410 in 2021, 494 in 2022, and 53 as of May 20 this year.

In June 2021, The Pentagon in the USA released a report saying it could not explain 143 of 144 cases of UAPs, reported by military planes between 2004 and 2021. That came following pressure, after official US military videos, which had captured bizarre objects on camera with unusual and incredible flight characteristics, were released and splashed on the front page of the New York Times, in 2017.

Then in January 2023, news stations across The States, including CNN and CNBC, reported the US government had received more then 350 new reports of UAPs, since March of 2021 – about half of which remained unexplained.

North Wales has also seen its fair share of UFO reports over the decades, with questions whether one crashed in the Berwyn Mountains in 1974. They also included sightings of strange objects over Caernarfon and Amlwch, just minutes apart, in 2001; and an unusual triangular craft, which was spotted over the Gwynedd skies in 2010.

In January this year, North Wales Live also reported on three mystery lights over Holyhead Mountain that baffled a local, which blinked out, as he and his son videoed them.
